Sean’s most famous role was playing Boromir in The Fellowship of the Ring. However, Boromir didn’t last long as, after trying to take the ring from Fordo, he was taken down by orcs while protecting the Hobbits.

Sean Bean lasted about the same time as Ned Stark as he did Boromir. Joffrey Baratheon had the Head of House Stark beheaded after just nine episodes! Since losing his head in season one, Bean has appeared in Silent Hill: Revelation, Possessor, and aided Matt Damon’s stranded astronaut in The Martian.

The screen legend’s recent television credits include Legends, The Frankenstein Chronicles, Snowpiercer, and the BBC’s prison series Time — for which he won the British Academy Television Award as Leading Actor.

Isaac Hempstead Wright was born in 1999 in Surrey, England. As a boy, he took acting classes to avoid playing soccer on cold British mornings! At a young age, Wright became interested in acting and joined a drama club to overcome his shyness. His passion for acting raised its head, and he started auditioning for roles.

Isaac’s big break came aged 10 when producers cast him as Bran Stark. His character was a blind warg and Three-Eyed Raven who possessed supernatural gifts.

Surprising every Game of Thrones fan, Bran Stark eventually won the Iron Throne (well, it was actually destroyed by Drogon’s dragon fire breath) to be crowned as the King of the Seven Kingdoms (well, it’s actually Six Kingdoms now!) Isaac dropped out of the University of Birmingham to focus on acting, but that didn’t go too well…

In 2019, the secular humanist and Harry Potter look-a-like returned to study neuroscience, saying he intended to continue acting while doing so. He last appeared in 2021’s Voyagers.

Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson was born in 1988 in Reykjavík, Iceland. A lanky teenager, the real-life Viking initially played basketball before becoming a professional strongman athlete. Standing a towering 6’8″, he was the perfect choice to replace ​Conan Stevens and Ian Whyte as Ser Gregor “The Mountain that Rides” Clegane from the fourth season onward.

Gregor Cleghane is Sandor “The Hound” Clegane’s older brother. The siblings have hated each other since Gregor scarred Sandor by thrusting his face into a brazier.

The Mountain became Cersei Lannister’s personal bodyguard and took delight in ripping enemies to pieces or chopping their heads off! He was eventually poisoned by Oberyn “The Red Viper” Martell’s poisoned spear during trial by combat.

After GoT, Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson won the Arnold Strongman Classic three times, became a Guinness World Record-holding deadlifter, and an undefeated heavyweight boxer. However, he only secured a few acting jobs, with his sole acting credit being a short but memorable part in Robbert Egger’s epic Viking saga, The Northman.

If you thought you knew The Hound from somewhere, you might recognize him for playing Michael “Lurch” Armstrong, the supermarket ogre from Edgar Wright’s comedy Hot Fuzz. You might also have recognized Scottish actor Rory McCann from his first acting job as an extra on Ron Howard’s Willow… if he wasn’t fired for laughing between scenes!

Gwendoline Christie was born in Worthing, West Sussex, England in 1978. As a child, she trained to become a gymnast but took up acting after she suffered a spinal injury.

Gymnastics loss was acting’s gain, as the 6’2″ giant actress graduated from Drama Centre London in 2005. Due to her tall physique, industry insiders told her she “would probably never work because she didn’t look the same as most actors.”

Inspired by Tilda Swinton’s performance in Orlando, when Gwendoline told her agent she’d like to work on screen, they told her, “Well, good luck with that!” Actor Simon Callow took her under his wing, and her feature film debut was a minor role in Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, Heath Leger’s last film.

Proving everyone wrong, she joined Thrones, brilliantly playing fierce warrior Brienne of Tarth. After acting on stage with the Royal Shakespeare Company, Dance made his feature film debut in the 1981 James Bond film For Your Eyes Only. Known for his booming voice, commanding presence, and versatile performances, Dance went on to appear in movies like Michael Collins, Gosford Park, and Alien 3.

While filming Your Highness in Belfast, Northern Ireland, producers wooed him to appear in Game of Thrones. He played Tywin Lannister, the ruthless patriarch of House Lannister of Casterly Rock, Warden of the West, Lord Paramount of the Westerlands, Hand of the King, and father to Cersei, Jaime, and Tyrion.

Tywin Lannister was one of the most influential and cruel political figures in Westerosi history. He despised his son Tyrion for being a dwarf and taking his wife’s life in childbirth. But did you know that George R.R. Martin based Tywin Lannister on King Edward I? Edward Longshanks, or the Hammer of the Scots, ruled England from 1272 to 1307.

His son Tyrion eventually got his revenge, taking his father down with a crossbow bolt to the nether regions!

In real life, Charles Dance isn’t half as bad as Tywin Lannister or Edward I, as he’s a devoted father to his three children. Since taking that crossbow bolt, he’s appeared in the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Mank, The King’s Man, The Crown, and Netflix’s The Sandman.

Nathalie Emmanuel was born in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, England in 1989. She inherited her good looks from her Dominican mother and half-Saint Lucian, half-English father.

Nathalie began her acting career in theater in the late 1990s, appearing in the West End production of The Lion King. In 2006, she began her TV career by starring as Sasha Valentine in the soap opera Hollyoaks. While working as an assistant in a clothes shop, she was cast as Daenerys Targaryen’s interpreter.

Missandei became a close confidante and trusted advisor to Dani, culminating in Nathalie’s promotion to a regular GoT cast member in 2015. The British actress became the show’s only prominent woman of color. However, while Game of Thrones finally included a woman of color, she was a former slave.

Missandei controversially lost her life in “The Last of the Starks” when Cersei ordered Gregor Clegane, aka The Mountain, to chop off her head while she was standing on the castle keep in chains. This caused much backlash among fans. The HBO show and George R.R. Martin’s original books were never known for their diversity.

Nathalie went on to play computer hacker Ramsey in Furious 7, the seventh installment of the Fast & Furious films. She also played Harriet in the science fiction Maze Runner franchise. In 2020, she played Jordan King alongside Kevin Hart in his series Die Hart.

After starring alongside Thomas Doherty in the supernatural horror film The Invitation, Nathalie Emmanuel will next appear in Francis Ford Coppola’s magnum opus, Megalopolis. She’s currently dating British actor Alex Lanipekun.

Peter Hayden Dinklage was born in New Jersey in 1969. He was born with achondroplasia, a genetic disorder that affects bone growth. He and his brother got into acting when they started performing puppet musicals for their neighbors.

Dinklage studied acting but worked for six years for a data-processing company before his theater acting career took off. He gained recognition with his breakout role playing Finbar McBride in the indie film The Station Agent in 2003.

Dinklage refused to be typecast by height and vowed never to play “elves or leprechauns.” But then, in May 2009, he was the first actor cast in Game of Thrones. Showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss tapped him up to play scheming genius Tyrion Lannister.

While his siblings rose to positions of power, Tyrion is despised and ostracised by his father and sister, who put him in charge of the sewers at Casterly Rock. Standing just 4’5″ tall, he rarely got physical but instead utilized his quick-thinking wit and intellect to defeat enemies.

Peter went on to star in X-Men: Days of Future Past, American Dreamer, and Cyrano. Most notably, as the giant Eitri in Avengers: Infinity War, he helped save the universe by casting Thor a new ax.

Peter was meant to reprise his role as Eitri in Thor: Love and Thunder, but his scenes ended up on the cutting room floor. In 2023, Dinklage appeared in the Toxic Avenger reboot. Most recently, you may have seen him in the Hunger Games prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

Superhero fans had seen Jack Gleeson years before he played the tyrant child King Joffrey Baratheon. Remember the scene when the Caped Crusader gave that little kid his telescope in Batman Begins? Well, that kid was a little Jack Gleeson.

And that wasn’t the first time he teamed up with Christian Bale… or dragons! He had an uncredited role-playing an even younger kid in the hugely underrated Reign of Fire.

The young Irish actor was born in Cork, Ireland, and raised in Dublin, where he also acted in theater roles. He won the role of Joffrey in his first year at Trinity College Dublin, where he studied philosophy and theology and continued studying in between filming. Luckily, he didn’t have far to commute, as much of Game of Thrones was filmed in his native Ireland.

The unique-looking actor was chosen to play Joffrey because while the prince was supposed to be King Robert Baratheon and Cersei Lannister’s eldest son and heir, he was Cersei and her twin brother Jaime’s son.

He inherited his father’s throne and became a cruel, spoiled, sadistic tyrant king. Joffrey married Margaery Tyrell but met his demise when Olenna Tyrell poisoned his drink during his wedding reception when everyone was distracted by pigeons flying out of a pie.

In medieval times, people used to bake bird pies; hence the song “Sing a Song of Sixpence”, where four and twenty baked blackbirds were baked in a pie. Anyhoo, in 2022, Jack made the Irish thriller In the Land of Saints and Sinners and married his long-time girlfriend, Róisín O’Mahony, in County Kerry.

While GoT kickstarted many young actors’ careers, veteran actor Jonathan Pryce was world-famous well before arriving on Westeros’ shores. Born in North Wales in 1947, he studied at London’s renowned Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where his tutor told him he would “never aspire to do more than playing villains on Z-Cars.”

His RADA tutor’s diss must have spurred the young actor on because he quickly proved his tutor wrong by going on to play Prince Hamlet in 1980. Pryce’s career took off with Terry Gilliam’s captivating Orwellian movie Brazil.

He further demonstrated his versatility in David Mamet’s Glengarry Glen Ross, Martin Scorsese’s The Age of Innocence, and even as a James Bond villain in Tomorrow Never Dies. In GoT, he played the High Sparrow, the leader of a shadowy religious cult called The Sparrows.

Pryce appeared as the threatening High Sparrow in just 12 episodes between 2015 and 2016. Fans believe George R. R. Martin based his character on Italian friar Girolamo Savonarola, who ruled the Republic of Florence in the late 15th Century.

To further give his old drama tutor the bird, Pryce went on to win two Tony Awards and two Laurence Olivier Awards. And if that wasn’t enough, he was also awarded an illustrious CBE medal (Commander of the British Empire) and knighted for his services to British drama. Yes, amongst all those knights in Westeros, Sir Jonathan Pryce is a real knight of the realm.

Since hanging up his Sparrows wings, Jonathan has appeared in The Wife, Taboo, The Two Popes, The Crown, the excellent Slow Horses, and 3 Body Problem.

Speaking of Monty Python’s Terry Gilliam, Finn Jones was born Terence Jones. He changed his name to avoid confusion with Monty Python’s other Terry… Terry Jones. Finn began his acting career with a breakthrough role on the British teen soap opera Hollyoaks.

He expanded his repertoire by appearing on perennial British TV soaps like Doctors and The Bill. Next, he landed the role of Santiago Jones in the Doctor Who spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures. Then, in 2011, he got his big break playing vain and arrogant The Knight of Flowers and heir to Highgarden, Ser Loras Tyrell.

Despite Finn’s questionable acting, Loras Tyrell was one of the most skilled knights in Westeros. After being imprisoned for months and confessing his guilt to the High Sparrow, Loras surrendered his title to become known as Brother Loras.

However, Finn’s time as Brother Loras was short-lived. Very short-lived. In fact, he only lasted as Brother Loras for a matter of minutes. That’s because Cersei Lannister took the lives of Loras, his father, Lord Mace Tyrell, and sister Margaery Tyrell when she blew up the Great Sept of Baelor with wildfire in one of the series’ most explosive scenes.

After Finn left the show, he was cast as Marvel superhero Danny Rand / Iron Fist in the disastrous Netflix show of the same name. He reprised the role in Marvel’s equally disastrous Netflix outings, The Defenders and Luke Cage.

To be fair, Luke Cage was slightly less disastrous! Since Iron Fist, young Finn has most recently appeared in Apple TV+’s Dickinson and The Roku Channel’s Swimming With Sharks.

Even though she’s called Isabella May Ramsey, luckily, she isn’t in House Bolton. ​​Bella Ramsey (not Ramsay) is the youngest of our stars. She was born in Nottingham in 2003. Yep, that’s the same Nottingham where Robin Hood and his merry men robbed from the rich and gave to the poor.

She started acting as a hobby when she was four and trained at the Television Workshop, a local drama school. In 2016, Bella made her Game of Thrones debut as the fiercely outspoken, 10-year-old Lyanna Mormont, Head of House Mormont of Bear Island, in season six’s “The Broken Man.”

Despite Lyanna’s young age, she quickly became a fan favorite due to her fierce determination, intelligence, and unwavering loyalty to the Stark family. Young Bella expertly portrayed the character’s no-nonsense leadership style and commanding presence.

However, Lyanna’s fearlessness was her undoing when she sacrificed herself trying to singlehandedly slay an undead wight giant in the Battle of Winterfell. Following her scene-stealing performances, Bella Ramsey has gone on to have a great career with roles in Resistance, Hilda, His Dark Materials, Becoming Elizabeth, Catherine Called Birdy, and Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget.

But by far and away, Bella’s biggest success is reteaming with Thrones alum Pedro Pascale to play Ellie in HBO’s adaptation of the zombie video game The Last of Us.

Aged 18, Ramsey was diagnosed as neurodivergent and feels this has “massively” influenced their career and performances. In 2023, the actress came out as non-binary, saying they are “Not 100% straight. I’m a little bit wavy,” adding that she didn’t mind what pronouns people use.

Born in 1985 in Carmarthen, Wales, Iwan Rheon was another young upstart. But unlike many other young GoT actors, he was already famous for his role in the E4 series Misfits.

Iwan played the invisible superhero Simon Bellamy, which must be a quandary as an actor because you’re always going to miss out on half your screen time being invisible! Nevertheless, Iwan won plaudits showcasing his range as an actor by turning socially awkward outcast Simon Bellamy into a confident superhero.

This performance won him the role of one of Thrones‘ most notorious and despised characters… Ramsay Bolton. His vain insecurity, lack of empathy, cunning manipulativeness, ruthless ambition, and sadistic pleasure in causing pain meant fans were glad to see the back of him when he met his demise…

The evil Ramsey Bolton finally met his maker in “Battle of the B*stards.” The ninth episode of season six saw the long-awaited showdown between Ramsay Bolton and Jon Snow. After accepting a duel, Jon swiftly beats Ramsay in hand-to-hand combat and locks him in the kennels, where Sansa Stark feeds him to the hungry hounds!

Since going to the dogs, Iwan Rheon has appeared in Neal Gaiman’s American Gods and Marvel’s laughable Inhumans. He also played Mötley Crüe guitarist Mick Mars in the 2019 film The Dirt.

On his own side of the pond, he has recently been on British TV in The Light in the Hall and Wolf. The fluent Welsh speaker, singer, songwriter, and guitar player lives in London and has a son with ex-flame actress and activist Zoë Grisedale.

Believe it or not, Lena Heady was born in Bermuda in 1973. Her father was a policeman in the British overseas territory. When she was 17, she performed in a school production at London’s Royal National Theatre, and scouts picked her for the 1992 film Waterland.

The British-Bermudan actress went on to appear in Merchant Ivory’s The Remains of the Day, The Jungle Book, and Ripley’s Game. She played Gorgo, Queen of Sparta and wife of King Leonidas I in 300. Next up, she played Sarah Connor in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

Lena played Queen Cersei Lannister from the first Game of Thrones‘ episode and was one of the show’s main villains. Cersei was King Robert Baratheon’s widow, Jaime’s twin sister, and Tyrion’s elder sister.

As Queen, Cersei ruled the Seven Kingdoms with an iron fist and made it all the way to GoT‘s final season in 2019. But she met her maker in season eight, episode five, when she and her twin brother Jaime passed away in each other’s arms while the Red Keep collapsed around them.

While playing Cersei, Lena also appeared in the underrated Dredd, The Purge, 300: Rise of an Empire, and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Since then, she’s lent her voice to several animations, like Wizards: Tales of Arcadia and Masters of the Universe: Revelation. She also voiced Maudra Fara / The Rock Singer in The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.

In a more grown-up role, the tattoo-loving actress has most recently been seen opposite Justin Theroux in the Watergate Scandal comedy-drama White House Plumbers.

HBO turned to a real Viking to play Jaime Lannister. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau was born in Rudkøbing, Denmark in 1970. He graduated from Copenhagen’s Danish National School of Performing Arts in 1993. Within a year, he had Laertes in Hamlet and won his breakout role in the famous Danish horror thriller Nightwatch.

He became known for playing tough guys, like Master Sergeant Gary Gordon in Ridley Scott’s wonderful Black Hawk Down. Ridley then cast him in his medieval epic Kingdom of Heaven, which must have proved great training for playing Jaime Lannister.

Nikolaj played the violent, verbally abusive Jaime from the first episode of Game of Thrones until his demise in season eight. As if he wasn’t evil enough already, he and his twin sister Cersei got it on.

During his downtime from filming GoT, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau appeared in Headhunters, opposite Tom Cruise in Oblivion, and played Horus in Alex Proyas’s unintentionally hilarious Gods of Egypt. He also starred in Brian De Palma’s 2019 crime thriller, Domino.

After the walls of the Red Keep finished off Jaime and Cersei, Coster-Waldau has since appeared in leading roles in Exit Plan, The Silencing, and Against the Ice. On the small screen, he recently appeared in Apple TV+’s adaptation of The Last Thing He Told Me.

On the big screen, he played Bob Hightower in Nick Casavetes’ 2023 crime thriller God Is a Bullet. If you’re a fan, you can next see Nikolaj portraying William the Conquerer — the French king who invaded England in 1066 — in King and Conqueror.

Margaret Constance Williams was born in 1997 in Bristol, England, and raised a few miles south in the tiny village of Clutton, Somerset. An obvious star in the making, Maisie studied performing arts at nearby Bath Dance College.

Passionate about acting and dance from a young age, she trained in ballet, tap, and street dance. Maisie was cast as Arya Stark at just 12 years old.

Her character became a fresh-faced baby assassin, training as a Faceless Man at the House of Black and White in Braavos. Arya Stark used her newfound skills to wreak her revenge on those who wronged her family. She took out Polluver with her trusty sword, “Needle.” She also bumped off Kingsguard Meryn Trant and Walder Frey, who wiped out half her family in The Red Wedding.

Arya Stark had a huge arc in the show. Surprisingly, the fierce little tike was the one who took down the show’s Big Bad, The Night King. She eventually married Gendry, becoming Queen Consort of the Seven Kingdoms. Eventually, Arya Stark sailed westwards to discover what lies west of the west.

And as Arya grew, so did Maisie. The cute but formidable British actress turned into a strong woman, starring as Rahne Sinclair / Wolfsbane in The New Mutants, playing Kim Noakes in the TV series Two Weeks to Live, and even portraying punk rock icon Pamela Rooke, aka Jordan, in Pistol.

In real life, Williams also co-founded Daisie, a social media platform designed to help creative professionals collaborate and showcase their work. In 2023, she split from her boyfriend of five years, Filipino-British model Reuben Selby.

Richard Madden was born in 1986 in Renfrewshire, Scotland. To combat his shyness, he became interested in acting, joining the Paisley Arts Centre’s youth theater program at age 11. Two years later, he won his first major role playing young Andy in the 2000 film adaptation of beloved Scottish author Iain Banks’ novel Complicity.

Madden continued to pursue acting while attending the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where he honed his craft and gained stage experience. During his studies, he was cast in the lead role of Dean McKenzie in the BBC series Hope Springs in 2009.

Madden gained critical acclaim for his portrayal of Romeo on the Globe Theater’s Romeo and Juliet tour. All that hard work paid off because, in 2011, the hunky Scottish actor won his breakout role as Robb Stark.

King Robb Stark, aka the Young Wolf and the King Who Lost the North, was shot by crossbow bolts and then bumped off by his chief vassal, Lord Roose Bolton, during the infamous Red Wedding at the end of the third season. Those damned Boltons!

As for Richard Madden, After Game of Thrones, his career soared. He starred as Sergeant David Budd a politician’s security guard in the critically acclaimed BBC drama Bodyguard, earning a Golden Globe Award along the way.

Madden appeared in the Elton John biopic Rocketman and played Lieutenant Joseph Blake in Sam Mendes’ terrific one-shot WW1 drama 1917. He joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Ikaris in Eternals, opposite fellow GoT alum Kit Harington. Most recently, Madden also took on the lead role in Amazon’s thriller series Citadel.

Gorgeous English actress Emilia Clarke was a relative newcomer to acting when she was cast as Daenerys Targaryen. Her character had one of the best arcs in the show because she started out as a timid, obedient young girl married off to Dothraki horse lord Khal Drogo. While her marriage was brutal, at least he was played by Jason Momoa!

But over eight seasons, as her dragons grew and she learned to harness their power, Daenerys became a fierce dragon-riding heiress to the Iron Throne.

Emilia delivered some of the HBO show’s most shocking moments, picking up four Emmy nominations, three Critics’ Choice Award nominations, and seven SAG Award nominations. In 2019, poor Emilia revealed she suffered two brain aneurysms, the first occurring shortly after filming GoT‘s first season.

While many expected Dany or her nephew and lover, Jon Snow, to ascend the Iron Throne, he actually took her life in the final season. Since then, Emilia has starred in the holiday rom-com Last Christmas, crime thriller Above Suspicion, and the sci-fi rom-com The Pod Generation.

Her first post-GoT television show was Marvel’s Secret Invasion. She played G’iah, the daughter of Skrull sect leader Talos, as they attempt to help Nick Fury from… you guessed it — a secret Skrull invasion. Despite a $212 million budget for six episodes, the show was one of Marvel’s worst.

Emilia will soon appear in two upcoming biopics: McCarthy and An Ideal Wife, playing the wife of U.S. infamous communist witch-finder Senator Joseph McCarthy. After that, you can see her playing Oscar Wilde’s wife, Constance Lloyd.

Kit Harington might not have been the show’s best actor, but he had all the necessary ingredients to play GoT‘s tragic, doomed hero. He was born Christopher Catesby Harington, and his father is real English landed gentry, Sir David Harington, 15th Baronet of The Harington Baronetcy, of Ridlington in the county of Rutland.

Kit is a descendant of Robert Catesby on his mother’s side. Along with Guy Fawkes, Robert Catesby attempted to assassinate King James the First of England by blowing up the Houses of Parliament in 1605!

Fast-forward 400 years, Kit Harington was cast as Jon Snow, Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, a brotherhood sworn to protect the realm from the dangers beyond the Wall in the far North. And we’re not talking about the Scottish!

After taking Daenerys’ life, Jon Snow was sent back to the Night’s Watch as punishment. However, playing Jon Snow gave Kit not only a life-changing role but also a real-life family.

Jon got together with Ygritte from north of the wall. As life imitates art, in 2011, Kit began dating the actress who plays Ygritte, Rosie Leslie, who’s from north of Hadrian’s Wall. They were married in Scotland in 2018 and have two children.

Kit went on to play Sersei’s boyfriend, Dane Whitman, in Marvel’s Eternals. That’s the superhuman, not Cersei Lannister. Unbeknownst to Dane, he became The Black Knight. After picking up the Ebony Blade, Dane heard vampire killer Blade’s voice, so we should see him in the Mahershala Ali Blade movie… if Marvel ever finally gets around to approving a script.

Sophie Belinda Turner was born in 1996 in Northampton, England. She attended Warwick Preparatory School and later King’s High School for Girls.

As the Wardeness of the North, she adopted Jon Snow’s dire wolf Ghost and departed King’s Landing for Winterfell to rebuild her family’s home as her siblings began their reign in King’s Landing.

After GoT, Sophie starred as the young Jean Grey in the X-Men films and appeared in another HBO show, The Staircase.

Turner married musician Joe Jonas in 2019, and they have two daughters, Willa and a second daughter born in 2022. All seemed like marital bliss for the Hollywood couple, but in 2023, Joe Jonas suddenly filed for divorce. A bitter custody battle ensued, and Sophie fled America, taking her daughters to her native England.
